What is sandhyavandana and why is it performed three times a day?

Sandhyavandana is a Vedic ritual of prayer, water offering, and mantra recitation done at sunrise, noon, and sunset. The three times mark the joining points of day and night, which tradition sees as especially powerful moments for worship.

What sandhyavandana is

The word sandhyavandana means salutation to sandhya, the twilight or junction time. Three such junctions happen each day: the moment the sun rises, the midday peak, and the moment the sun sets. Tradition holds that these in-between times carry a special quality, neither fully day nor fully night, and so they are seen as the right moments to turn toward the divine. The ritual includes sipping water, offering water to the sun with cupped hands, called arghya, and reciting the Gayatri mantra. Breath control and silent meditation are also part of it. The whole practice is about purification, both of the body and the mind, before standing in the presence of the sacred.

Where it comes from

Sandhyavandana is one of the oldest daily duties described in Vedic texts. The Grihyasutras and Dharmasutras, ancient guides to household and religious life, lay out the practice in detail. It is closely tied to solar worship, the sun being seen as a source of light, life, and truth. The Gayatri mantra, addressed to the solar light that illumines all minds, sits at the heart of the ritual. Traditionally it was taught to a young person at the time of the sacred thread ceremony and was meant to be kept up every day for life.

What the three times mean

Each of the three sandhyas carries its own character. Sunrise is for beginning, clarity, and setting intention. Noon is the peak of light and energy. Sunset is for letting go, reflection, and transition into rest. Together they mark the full arc of a day. Performing the ritual at all three is a way of consecrating the whole day, not just a single moment of it. The water offering to the sun is also seen as an act of gratitude, acknowledging the sun as the source of all life and warmth.

Today

Sandhyavandana has become less common in daily life, especially in cities and among the diaspora. The full three-time practice is now rare outside of those who have made it a serious commitment. Some people keep one session, usually at sunrise. Others know the Gayatri mantra and recite it quietly without the full ritual. The practice varies by region, community, and family tradition. In some households it is still passed down carefully. In others it has faded into memory. Where it is kept, people often describe it as a way of grounding the day and staying connected to something larger than routine.
