What does the trishul (trident) mean?

The trishul is a three-pronged trident, most famously Shiva's weapon. It carries layers of meaning tied to the number three and to the nature of reality itself.

The three prongs

The trishul's three prongs are read in different ways across the tradition. One reading sees them as the three gunas—sattva, rajas, and tamas—the three qualities that the tradition says shape all matter and mind. Sattva is purity and clarity. Rajas is energy and movement. Tamas is heaviness and inertia. Together they make up everything we see. Another reading sees the three prongs as three aspects of reality: creation, preservation, and dissolution. A third sees them as past, present, and future. The number three itself carries weight in Hindu thought, and the prong is a shape of power and focus.

Shiva's trident

The trishul is most closely linked to Shiva, one of the principal deities. In images and stories, Shiva holds the trishul as his emblem and weapon. It stands for his power to bring about change and transformation. The trident is also seen in temples, worn in ash as a mark on the forehead, and appears on flags and in ritual objects. In devotional practice, the trishul can represent Shiva's presence and his role as the destroyer and transformer who makes room for new creation.

Today

The trishul appears on temple banners, in home shrines, and as a pendant or amulet. You see it in Indian art, tattoos, and on flags at temples around the world. For many, it is a simple marker of Hindu identity and faith. For others, it carries the deeper meanings tied to the gunas or to Shiva's role. How much weight someone gives to the symbolism depends on their practice and knowledge.
