In Hindu cosmology, south is the direction of Yama, the lord of death and the realm of the ancestors. Placing the head of the deceased toward the south is understood as orienting the departing soul toward that realm. Ancient texts on household rites and conduct, including the Dharmasutras and Grihyasutras, specify this positioning for the body during funeral preparations. The Garuda Purana, which deals at length with death and what follows it, reinforces the same idea. The direction is not chosen casually. It is part of a wider symbolic map of the cosmos in which each direction carries meaning and purpose.
A deliberate contrast with the living
The south-facing orientation sets the dead apart from the living in a very clear way. In everyday life, sleeping with the head pointing south is generally avoided in the tradition. The preferred directions for sleep are east or north. So when the body is placed with the head to the south, it signals a crossing over. The person is no longer in the world of the living. The orientation itself becomes a kind of ritual boundary. This contrast between how the living rest and how the dead are laid out is intentional and meaningful within the tradition.

The association of south with death and the ancestors is very old in Indian thought. It appears across several layers of text and practice. The word for south in Sanskrit, dakshin, also carries associations with giving and with the ancestors. Over time, this directional symbolism became fixed into the rules for funeral rites.
