home space and vastu
What role does color play in Vastu, and which colors are recommended for different rooms?
How Vastu connects color to direction and energy
Vastu sees the home as a living map of directions, each linked to a deity, an element, and a quality. Color is one of the tools used to strengthen or calm whatever that direction carries. The idea is that the right color in the right room helps the energy of that space flow well, while a clashing color can disturb it. This thinking also connects to Jyotisha, where each planet has its own color. The sun is linked to orange and gold, the moon to white and silver, and so on. A room that faces a certain direction may be given the color of the planet or deity that governs it.
Colors for specific rooms
The puja room is most often painted white or yellow. White is seen as pure and calm, and yellow is linked to wisdom and auspiciousness. Both are thought to support devotion and focus. The north is associated with Kubera, the deity of wealth and growth, so green is often favored there, whether in a study, a living area facing north, or a home office. Green is seen as a color of abundance and new growth. Red and strong orange are generally avoided in the bedroom. These colors are seen as active and stimulating, which the tradition considers unsuitable for rest. Softer shades, like light pink, cream, or pale blue, are seen as more calming for that space. The kitchen, often in the southeast, is linked to fire, so earthy tones, light orange, or warm yellows are sometimes suggested there. Blue and white are often connected to the northeast, a direction seen as spiritually sensitive and linked to water.
Where these ideas come from
The color associations in Vastu draw from older layers of Indian thought. The link between planets and colors comes largely from Jyotisha. The directional deities and their qualities are described in Vastu texts that developed over a long period. These two streams blended over time into the practical guidance that Vastu practitioners give today. Different regional traditions and different practitioners can give somewhat different advice, so the color suggestions for a room are not always the same across all schools of Vastu.
How people use it today
Many families, especially in India and in the diaspora, consult a Vastu practitioner before painting a new home. Others follow general guidelines passed down in the family. Some people use these color ideas alongside modern interior design, treating them as a framework rather than a strict rule. There is no scientific evidence that wall color affects luck or spiritual energy in the ways Vastu describes. The tradition presents it as a matter of belief and intention, and many people find it a meaningful way to think about their home.
