What is the correct direction to sleep in, according to Vastu and Ayurveda?

Both Vastu and Ayurvedic tradition favour sleeping with the head pointing south. Sleeping with the head to the north is widely seen as the least favourable choice.

What the tradition says

In Vastu and in Ayurvedic thought, the direction your head points while sleeping is seen as important. South is the most favoured direction. The head pointing south and the feet pointing north is considered restful and good for wellbeing. East is also seen as acceptable, especially for students and those who study or pray, since east is linked to the rising sun and to learning. West is treated as a middle option, neither strongly good nor strongly bad. North is the direction the tradition most cautions against. The north is linked to Yama, the lord of death, in some texts, and sleeping with the head toward it is seen as inauspicious. Ayurvedic tradition also connects this to the body's energy and to the idea that lying in that direction disturbs rest.

Where the idea comes from

These ideas appear in old texts on health and on the design of living spaces. The reasoning given in these texts is that the Earth itself has a pull, running from south to north, and that the body works with it better when the head is to the south. The north-facing caution is found in more than one tradition across South Asia, which is why it has stayed so widely known. The exact origin is debated, and different texts give slightly different reasons.

What science says

The Earth does have a magnetic field, running roughly from south to north. Some researchers have looked at whether this affects sleep, but the evidence is limited and no strong conclusion has been reached. There is no proven medical harm in sleeping in any particular direction. This is an area where the traditional belief and current science have not clearly met.

How people think about it today

Many families, especially when setting up a new home, still think about which way the bed faces. In small apartments or rented rooms, it is not always possible to choose, and most people simply do the best they can with the space available. Some follow the south-facing rule closely, others treat it as a general guide rather than a strict rule. Practices vary by region, family, and how closely someone follows Vastu principles overall.
