fasts and vrats
Why do Hindus fast on Saturdays and what deity is associated with it?
Shani and Saturday
Saturday is called Shanivar in Sanskrit, the day of Shani. In Hindu tradition, Shani is a powerful deity linked to Saturn and is seen as a graha, a cosmic force that shapes life events. Unlike gentler deities, Shani is thought to bring hard lessons and tough times. The tradition holds that Shani's difficult effects can be eased through fasting, prayer, and offerings on Saturday. People fast partly to show respect and devotion, and partly in the belief that this practice softens Shani's harsh influence in their lives.
How people fast and what they offer
The way people observe Shanivar vrat varies by family and region. Some eat only once a day or eat light food like fruit, milk, or simple grains. Others avoid salt or eat only black sesame and sesame oil. Many light oil lamps, especially sesame oil lamps, in the evening. Black sesame seeds, black clothes, and black flowers are common offerings because black is linked to Shani. Some people visit a Shani temple on Saturday or read stories from the Shani Mahatmya, texts that tell of Shani's power and how devotion can help.
Where it comes from
This practice comes from the Jyotisha tradition, the Hindu science of astronomy and astrology. In that system, the nine grahas, or cosmic bodies, are seen as forces that shape events and character. Shani is one of the most feared because it is linked to delay, hardship, and karmic lessons. Over time, fasting and worship became the common way people tried to work with Shani's influence rather than simply fear it.
Today
Saturday fasting for Shani remains common in Hindu households, both in India and in diaspora communities. Some people fast every Saturday, others only when they feel Shani's influence is strong in their chart, and some do it at certain times of year. The practice sits alongside modern life without conflict. For many, it is a way to feel grounded in tradition and to have a sense of agency during difficult times, whether or not they believe in astrology.
