What is Kamada Ekadashi and what boon is it said to grant?

Kamada Ekadashi is a fast day in early spring, at the start of the Hindu new year. The tradition says it fulfills wishes and removes certain spiritual debts.

When it falls and what it means

Kamada Ekadashi comes on the first Ekadashi day of the Hindu new year, in the month of Chaitra during the bright fortnight. 'Kamada' means wish-fulfilling or desire-granting. People fast on this day and stay awake through the night in worship. The fast is said to grant the wishes of those who keep it with care and devotion.

The story behind it

The Varaha Purana tells a story that explains why this fast is so powerful. A Gandharva couple, Lalita and Lalit, were separated by a curse placed on them by a Rakshasa, a demon. Their separation caused them great suffering. Through the grace of keeping Kamada Ekadashi, they were reunited and freed from the curse. This story shows how the fast can break through obstacles and bring what the heart seeks.

What boon it is said to grant

Beyond fulfilling personal wishes, the tradition holds that Kamada Ekadashi removes Brahma-hatya, a serious spiritual debt said to come from killing a Brahmin. This makes it a fast for both personal desires and for spiritual cleansing. The boon is seen as coming from Lord Vishnu's grace, since Ekadashi fasts are devoted to him.

How it is kept today

Many people observe Kamada Ekadashi by fasting from food and water, or eating only simple foods like fruits and milk. Some stay awake and chant or read sacred texts. Families often gather to mark the day together. The fast is kept both for personal wishes and as part of the yearly cycle of worship. How strictly it is observed varies by family, region, and personal practice.
